Within the mountains that surround Waterville Valley exist a number of New England's highest peaks. The Denali Challenge is to hike five of these peaks in one weekend. The ultimate challenge is to hike the five peaks equaling 20,000 feet (Denali is at 20,328') claiming the title "Alive after five". This year, hikers will be able to choose from a number of different peaks for the five mountains they will climb. Participation in the weekend is free and everyone is welcome. Whether you're an experienced hiker looking to master all five peaks, or just looking to join the fun, there is something to fit all abilities and ages. To pre-register e-mail marketing@waterville.com

HIKE ANY FIVE OF THE FOLLOWING PEAKS TO ACHIEVE 20,000’
(OR A SIXTH PEAK IF ELEVATION IS NEEDED).

PEAKS (Elevation)
Tecumseh (4003)
Welch (2605)
Dickey (2734)
Snow’s (2800)
North Peak Tripyramid (4180)
Middle Peak Tripyramid (4140)

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Hikes can be done on Saturday and Sunday, but hikers can choose to get one of the mountains out of the way on Friday. We do encourage a warm up hike on Friday to one of the many scenic outlooks in Waterville Valley. Check-in will take place from 6-8pm on Friday August 8th at the Info Booth located in Town Square where participants will receive their map, hiker card and t-shirt (limited quantities) for those who preregistered.

If you can’t make it to check-in hiker cards will be e-mailed to you this year. The hashtags #denalichallenge and #aliveafter5 can be used on social media to confirm hikes are completed throughout the weekend.

The course starts near Town Square, covering a total of 7,700 feet of cumulative elevation gain as it climbs Snow's Mountain, East Osceola, Osceola, and Tecumseh, before sending it back to Town Square for a hero's welcome. Racers will be supported with multiple aid stations along the way. THIS IS NO SMALL FEAT! Do not undertake this challenge lightly. Stay tuned for more details and signup to open in the near future. View the course here.

THE BLACK BEAR HALF MARATHON

You get a finisher’s medal (if you finish), post-race snacks, and the chance to win prizes. Be sure to pace yourself as you race along the 13.1-mile course on the oldest maintained trail network in the US. Starting and finishing in the picturesque Town Square, the route rolls along the valley floor and into the hills as you travel in the shadows of the towering 4,000 foot peaks of Tecumseh, the Osceolas, and the Tripyramids. Three aid stations with water, hydration supplement, and nutrition. Terrain: 85% double-track trail, 13% single-track trail, and 2% road.

THE BLACK BEAR SHORT TRAIL

4 miles and 600 feet of trail through White Mountain forests and streams around the valley floor. You get a finisher’s medal, post-race snacks, and the chance to win prizes in the raffle. The course runs along a mix of single track and wide dirt double-track around the valley’s south-end trails with NO ROAD! Terrain: 50% double-track, 50% single-track.

THE BEAR CUB FUN RUN

The whole family, including Grandma and Grandpa, will enjoy the scenic 1-mile Bear Cub Fun Run! Whether you take in the Valley's grand views at a walk or make a mad dash for the finish line, you'll lend your valuable support to students at WVES and take home a signature Black Bear medal waiting for you at the finish line. If parents want to run with their children, they must also be registered. Terrain: 100% double-track trail.

SCHWENDI FEST

NOT YOUR AVERAGE OKTOBERFEST

Waterville's 3rd Annual Schwendi Fest is taking place on October 12th! This mountain-top extravaganza celebrates the stunning foliage season while looking ahead to ski season! Enjoy a scenic chairlift ride up Tecumseh Express and treat yourself to a Schwendi Hutte BBQ, and drinks. There will be plenty of family-friendly games and activities -water balloon launches, treasure hunts, musical chairs, and more! We'll be firing up the Schwendi Hutte BBQ, grilling burgers, hot dogs, and bratwursts! Hot apple cider (spiked and unspiked), beer, and wine will be available for purchase. If you're staying in the valley, you can hop on the resort trolley and ride it up to the ski resort!

Wear a cozy sweater, sip on some hot apple cider, bring the kids to paint pumpkins, and take in mountainous foliage views, all from 3,600’ elevation. Whether you’re looking to leaf-peep, enjoy quality family time, or simply sit on the Schwendi Hutte deck and crack open a cold one - there’s no better place to spend your long weekend!
