Waterville Valley Resort, NH--- Memorial Day is the traditional start of the summer travel season – so this year escape to the White Mountains for a fun-filled Memorial Day Weekend including an annual Chowderfest, and a fishing derby just for kids at Waterville Valley.
On Saturday, May 26, kids can try to catch Corcoran Pond’s elusive Kirby during the annual Casting for Kirby Youth Fishing Derby and win a prize. Registration opens at 8 a.m. in Town Square and the fun starts at 8:30 a.m. for the ages of 7 and younger and at 8:45 a.m. for those between 8 and 15 years old. If you register the kids before May 25, the fee is $6 and after is $10. Prizes will be awarded across all age groups. Family friendly entertainment will be provided, including face painting during the morning, a balloon twister, a story hour at the gazebo and a visit with Bruce the Moose and Curious George.
Then on Sunday, May 27, sample a variety of chowders from local restaurants at the 29th Annual Chowderfest & Brews. Chowder sampling runs from 12 noon to 2p.m. with guests submitting ballots for their favorites and the winner awarded the “Golden Clam Award” for best chowder. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, and that covers all the chowder tasting.
While enjoying the chowder and brews, guests will also be treated to live music on the Gazebo Stage from 12 noon to 3 p.m. by Brad and Joey and additional live entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m. by Sum x 4.
On Monday, May 28, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Town Square is having a River Otter Feeding. The program goes from 11: 30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and kids can join the staff, who will tell them all about otter biology and ecology while serving the little ones some treats.
