Many of us enjoy skiing, but why not escape to a resort that offers a host of winter fun. If you have a family or group of friends with both, the good news is there are still many ways to enjoy a ski resort, and Waterville Valley Resort, NH, has you covered.
In addition to downhill and Nordic skiing, there are a wealth of activities available for both adults and children. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are alternative ways to enjoy the surrounding White Mountains beyond strapping on ski boots. Let the staff at the Adventure Center, located in Town Square, set you up with snowshoe rentals or a Fat Bike. A Fat Bike demo ride is offered on Sunday and Thursday at 1 p.m. (conditions permitting) for only $15 plus the cost of the rental. Or explore some nearby hiking trails on foot. Other seasonal options include tubing, dog sled excursions and horse-drawn sleigh rides. And, a full service ice rink is next to the Town Square.
Thanks to the resort’s Freedom Pass, many activities are affordable, too. This is truly a family resort, with almost everything centrally located around the Town Square where it is common to see people gathering, folks walking their dogs and cross-country skiers passing through.
The Freedom Pass offers many benefits to anyone staying in a Waterville Valley Resort hotel or condo*, including:
· Admission to the White Mountain Athletic Club. Here you can use the 25m indoor pool, saunas, whirlpool, steam rooms, indoor track and weight and cardio rooms. For an extra fee, there is massage, tanning and racquetball available too. See the WMAC website for more information.
· Ice skating at the Waterville Valley Ice Arena. Whether you are a kid or a kid at heart, you can lace up some skates and take some laps around the ice arena for only $5 per rental. Check the Ice Arena schedule for public skating times.
· Curious George Story Time at the Rey Center. Located in the Curious George Cottage, the Rey Center holds regularly scheduled story hours on Saturdays 11 a.m.-noon and 4-5 p.m.
· Open Gym & Indoor Climbing Wall at the Recreation Department. Let the kids get out some energy during any regularly scheduled open gym time, including tot open gym, open basketball and open climb times. They also offer dodgeball, pickleball, build-a-bear, open gym and all kids of activities for families. Check the Waterville Valley Recreation Department schedule or the Resort Insider for more information.
*The Freedom Pass is available to guests staying at Town Square, Black Bear, Golden Eagle, Best Western Silver Fox, Village Inn Condominium and Valley Inn.
All these activities will work up an appetite, and thankfully there are several restaurants located right in the valley including Coyote Grill, La Tasse, La Hacienda Mexicana, Mulligans on Corcoran Pond, Old Waterville Pizza Co. and Legends 1291 Sports Bar. For anyone with a sweet tooth, there is Sugar Rush Ice Cream and Candy. To remember the trip to Waterville Valley, there are several shops offering gifts and memorabilia in the Town Square.
